Wildlife > Lester Reed  > Animals > Africa Wildlife 2008
Southern Africa provides an unparallel opportunity to slip into the past. Large game reserves let us experience Africa as we think of it – an untamed land populated by exotic animals. Although this is far from the reality of Africa, let me share my pictures with you of a land that soon may be lost. Visit with me the magnificent animals that now roam these game reserves, the last islands of “old Africa”.
The pictures in this section were taken in four game reserves in Botswana and Zambia. Both countries have taken major steps to protect their native wildlife. However an ever increasing population places a greater demand for the scares revenues of the government and pose a constant threat to the continuation of conservation efforts.

Pictures were taken with a Cannon Rebel xti using a Cannon 100-400mm zoom l type lens or a Cannon EFS 17-85 mm lens.

Lester Reed > This 11 year old male is the boss of a pride of 14 females and young cubs (or so he thinks). In reality his role is to mate and spend his days patrolling and marking his territory. The females take care of everything else.
Lester Reed > The head guy was dubbed Gregory by the park rangers.
Lester Reed > With nothing to eat and tired of being harassed by the young cubs who were climbing on him in an attempt to get him to play, Gregory sets off to patrol the 45miles of perimeter of his territory.
Lester Reed > When lions are stalking their prey three major things are important: 1. Stay down wind – that way they can’t smell you; 2. Keep hidden – that way they can’t see you; 3. Keep quiet – that way they can’t hear you. Of course there are other lion principles that must be followed, but these are the three main alarm senses that prey rely on to keep from being caught. The two lions in the picture are doing all three – especially the hidden one.
Lester Reed > A lioness on the hunt stalking a Cape Buffalo.
Lester Reed > On the stalk this lioness passed within six feet of me. She gave me a look but keep on going, more interested in a buffalo meal than a human one.
Lester Reed > The magnificent condition of these lionesses is a tribute to their hunting skills.
Lester Reed > This was dinner!
